Dollhouse

Bei der berechtigten Frage, warum Whedon Dr. Horrible nur so kurz online lässt, und uns dann auf die DVD warten lässt, gibt's hier nen coolen Vorschlag:

The point is that any attempt at creating scarcity will ultimately fail online. When the DVD is released with the musical commentary, it'll get uploaded and distributed online as well. This is not necessarily bad news for Whedon and the production, however — the unauthorized copies will likely be downloaded by fans who missed the online tease who are waiting to buy the DVD, or people just checking it out to see if they're really ready and willing to spend money on showtunes.

It raises the question then, why not leave the video up and sell advertising against it, like the creators of South Park have done? Because riding into town with a distribution twist garners more free publicity.

Sounds reasonable to me. Auch wenn ich natürlich zu den (wenigen?) gehören werde, die vermutlich Geld dafür ausgeben werden, so oder so.

The Closing Event of the 2008 Comic Con n San Diego will be a large screen (actually, 6 large screens) screening of Once More With Feeling, the benchmark television-musical Episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

The Powers That Be at Comic Con have arranged with 20th Century FOX and Whedonopolis.com to feature Once More With Feeling the way it should be seen, in a room of fans singing and dancing and just acting crazy!

10:45-12:00 Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog— The story of a low-rent supervillain (Neil Patrick Harris as Dr. Horrible), the hero who keeps beating him up (Nathan Fillion as Captain Hammer), and the cute girl from the laundromat he's too shy to talk to (Felicia Day as Penny). This musical in three parts, created for the Internet and written by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon, Zack Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen, premieres in its entirety on the big screen at Comic-Con. Room 6B

Youtube, Prequel, Rambazamba!

Seit nun kann man auch Dr. Horrible bei Youtube hypen, mögen, raten, weiterempfehlen usw. Sogar Felicia Day freut sich drüber. Was aber noch viel lustiger ist: Erinnert ihr euch noch an den Comic-Tie-In, der für den 2. Juli angekündogt war? Whedonesque war schlau genug und hat den Dark Horse myspace ... erm, gehackt:

That comic about Captain Hammer, nemesis of Dr. Horrible, can be read right now, although MySpace Dark Horse Presents Issue 12 isn't supposed to be up until July 2. Basically, the individual story links work, even through the site's main page hasn't yet put up the Issue 12 index. Oops!

Also, Be Like Me!, (written by Zack Whedon, übrigens) kann man hier gucken. Los, los los!

Matt Roush befragt Whedon zu Dr. Horrible

Man beachte z.B. die geplanten DVD-Extras:

The ultimate goal: a DVD, at which time perhaps enough profit can be made "to pay the people who were doing us favors," says Whedon. In a chat following my nearly private screening (attended only by Whedon, a few of his New York-based agents and me), Whedon confided, "We're already working on some of the DVD extras, which are going to be the finest in all the land. We're actually going to do, in addition to the commentary, what we refer to as ‘commentary with an exclamation point'! A musical commentary that is a completely original musical, that is all commentary songs, and we're writing that now." As I gasped at that audacious notion, he continued: "We're just piling it on. We're like, we're going to make more fun of the idea of extras than anything else."

Ich mein... erm, hallo?! Gesungene Kommentare?! Wie geil ist das denn??

Wirklich nette Geschichte, zum Cast, zur Entstehung und allem drum und dran. Auch über Dollhouse wird gesprochen:

How did this affect Whedon's work on the Dollhouse pilot? "I told Fox going in that I'm making this, it's going to take six days of shooting, and during those six days you'll get bupkis. They're like it doesn't matter, you're still filming your pilot—that you haven't broken yet—in two months." He sighs. "It's been quite a time."

Which begs the question: Could there ever be a musical Dollhouse episode? "Well, Eliza (Dushku) has a lovely voice. But first I have to make a normal Dollhouse, which is hard enough." So how's it going? "There's still tweaks. Birth pangs. It's never simple, but it's going well."

"A classic talk-then-break-into-song musical"

Joss meint zu Dr. Horrible:

"It's a classic talk-then-break-into-song musical," Whedon told SFX. "The songs are a pop/show hybrid - that is, the sound is poppy and (hopefully) catchy, but the lyrics progress rather than just repeat. The songs move the story. But ya can't stop hummin' 'em! (Legally. Hum-stoppage will result in up to six months in WoW as some lame healer)."

And now for the touchdown

At last the time has come to reveal to you our Master Plan. BEWARE! Those with weak hearts should log off lest they be terrified by the twisted genius of our schemes! Also pregnant women and the elderly should consider reading only certain sentences. Do not mix with other blogs. Do not operate heavy machinery while reading this blog. You must be this tall to read. ‘Kay?

It is time for us to change the face of Show Business as we know it. You know the old adage, “It’s Show Business – not Show Friends”? Well now it’s Show Friends. We did that. To Show Business. To show Show Business we mean business. (Also, there are now other businesses like it.)

ONE WEEK ONLY! AN INTERNET MINISERIES EVENT!

"Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog" will be streamed, LIVE (that part’s not true), FREE (sadly, that part is) right on Drhorrible.com, in mid-July. Specifically:

ACT ONE (Wheee!) will go up Tuesday July 15th.

ACT TWO (OMG!) will go up Thursday July 17th.

ACT THREE (Denouement!) will go up Saturday July 19th.

All acts will stay up until midnight Sunday July 20th. Then they will vanish into the night, like a phantom (but not THE Phantom – that’s still playing. Like, everywhere.)

And now to answers a few Frequently (soon to be) Asked Questions:

1) Why, Joss? Why? Why now, why free, why us?

Once upon a time, all the writers in the forest got very mad with the Forest Kings and declared a work-stoppage. The forest creatures were all sad; the mushrooms did not dance, the elderberries gave no juice for the festival wines, and the Teamsters were kinda pissed. (They were very polite about it, though.) During this work-stoppage, many writers tried to form partnerships for outside funding to create new work that circumvented the Forest King system.

Frustrated with the lack of movement on that front, I finally decided to do something very ambitious, very exciting, very mid-life-crisisy. Aided only by everyone I had worked with, was related to or had ever met, I single-handedly created this unique little epic. A supervillain musical, of which, as we all know, there are far too few.

The idea was to make it on the fly, on the cheap – but to make it. To turn out a really thrilling, professionalish piece of entertainment specifically for the internet. To show how much could be done with very little. To show the world there is another way. To give the public (and in particular you guys) something for all your support and patience. And to make a lot of silly jokes. Actually, that sentence probably should have come first.

2) What happens when it goes away? Does it go to a happy farm for always like Fluffy did when mommy was crying and the neighbor kept washing his fender?

No, Dr horrible will live on. We intend to make it available for download soon after it’s published. This would be for a nominal fee, which we’re hoping people will embrace instead of getting all piratey. We have big dreams, people, and one of them is paying our crew.

And somewhat later, we will put the complete short epic out on DVD – with the finest and bravest extras in all the land. We’ll go into greater detail about that at Comiccon, but we’re changing the face of Show Friendliness a second time with that crazy DVD.

3) Joss, you are so kind, and generous, and your forehead is like, huge, like SCARY, like I think I can see Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint hanging off it… what can WE do to help this musical extravanganza?

What you always do, peeps! What you’re already doing. Spread the word. Rock some banners, widgets, diggs… let people know who wouldn’t ordinarily know. It wouldn’t hurt if this really was an event. Good for the business, good for the community – communitIES: Hollywood, internet, artists around the world, comic-book fans, musical fans (and even the rather vocal community of people who hate both but will still dig on this). Proving we can turn Dr Horrible into a viable economic proposition as well as an awesome goof will only inspire more people to lay themselves out in the same way. It’s time for the dissemination of the artistic process. Create more for less. You are the ones that can make that happen.

Wow. I had no idea how important you guys were. I’m a little afraid of you.

Firefly Blu-Ray im September? Herbst? Winter? 2009?

1–2 p.m.: Dollhouse

Das Comicon Lineup ist mehr oder weniger fertig und liefert also zweimal Joss. Und sollte Tahmoh dort sein, hätt er's wohl recht leicht:

This is pure speculation, but given the traditional 15-minute pause between panels, this could in theory put Dollhouse in the same room as Battlestar Galactica, since that panel is slated for a 2:15 PM start time. If nothing else, it would make things easier on Tahmoh Penikett, presuming he’s there.
