whedonesque-comment of the week

Huzzah:

I love the set design. After so many shows about shadowy quasi-governmental organisations operating from vast underground concrete walled bunkers it's good to see a nice, comfortable environment. Maybe the power behind the Dolls is.... Ikea!

Nah. Then they'd be called Erik, Viktor, Sigurd and Niklas.

Competition

  • ABC - Dancing with the Stars
  • NBC - Chuck
  • CBS - The Big Bang Theory / How I Met Your Mother
  • CW - Gossip Girl
Neil Patrick Harris) bei How I Met Your Mother und Michelle Trachtenberg bei Gossip Girl.

Trailer Wars (IV)

Dollhouse: 41,366
Fringe: 43,368

Es ist wie erwartet passiert, Fringe überholt.

myspace

Ohne zu wissen, ob's Fanmade, Viral oder ARG ist, habe ich folgende Profile gefunden: Dollhouse, Adelle, Topher, Boyd, Claire, Paul, Echo, Sierra, November, Victor

Darauf eine Antwort im dollhouseforums:

Why would someone without a personality have a MySpace?

...

Actually, don't answer that.

(Buffy's) darkness is not an imitation of what she’s not but a search for what she is.

SPOILER (mark it to read it)

We're both teaching her to turn on us." (Paul zu Alpha).

Sommerpause

Dollrific! verlinkt die neuen Bilder und lässt dabei was fallen:

I'm told by someone who knows things that filming doesn't pick up again until July or August, so we won't see anything beyond the pilot for at least another month or two.

Ask Steven DeKnight

The Controversial Ones. "Spiral", auch von ihm, war immer eine meiner Lieblingsfolgen der 5. Staffel. Also: Let's go and ask him some questions!

Edit: Noch bis 23. Juni.

"I like Buffy too"

Kinda cute.

"Echo" Script Review, die vierhundertundzwölfte

Eine mir bisher unbekannte Rezension des "Echo"-Scripts wäre hier. Fängt cool skeptisch an (Faith-Hasser), entwickelt sich dann aber zu:

Like Buffy and Angel, Dollhouse is all about reversing expectation. With the Buffyverse you always have to be asking "what is it?", followed by "what is it really?". With Dollhouse you have to be asking "who are you?" followed by "who are you really?" Near the end of the pilot script, after several reveals, I was very much on my toes yelling "fuck you, you're not really you, you're a doll!" Of course, this is the reaction any writer wants to inspire from their audience...even if at this point the audience is just me sitting in front of a computer monitor reading a script acting like a maniac. Well done Whedon...well done.

There is so much potential for this show. I think it is different enough from Buffy to attract a new audience, but it has a similar enough taste that will keep the rabid Buffy fans from going hungry. Dollhouse is going to be a super-sexy series that's going to get a lot of people tuning in.

Und endet dann in: "-- Joss Whedon--what a drunk."

SPOILER - Dollhouse Q&A

Another interesting question: since their minds are clearly wiped of the memory of having made the deal in the first place, what reason does the Dollhouse have to abide by the 5-year rule if their Actives have no idea how much time has passed and no memory of the deal they made? Is there some way the Actives have to ensure this? Perhaps someone on the outside who know what’s going on and can call the Dollhouse on it after the five years have passed?

2.) Ich glaube sie brechen die 5-year-rule.

Remote Free TV

Hier ist jemand optimistisch:

I actually think that’s very doable in normal circumstances (assuming the show is any good). In its season finale, LOST, which is on the wane viewers-wise (although it had a strong year story-wise) for all the normal reasons that plague serial shows, plus somewhat wacky scheduling, had 6.453 million 18-49 viewers. So, when FOX thinks about break even with the Remote Free promotion, if a show like TSCC is the benchmark the 5 million, attempting to get to 5 million seems very doable.

Then again, FOX may have higher expectations for both the shows and the promo and expect them to perform as well as LOST or Heroes, which typically averaged over 6.5 million 18-49 year old viewers. Heroes may be the benchmark rather than TSCC, and I think it probably should be.

Dazu aber auch eine etwas skeptischere Analyse:

Some people familiar with negotiations say Fox was hoping to get even greater premiums for Remote-Free TV programs.

dollhouse.wikia.com

Hier jetzt Admin. Hilfe brauche.

J. J. Abrams, du hast mein Leben zerstört.

My take on negativity

I posted it over there, but I find it important enough to post it here too. For all you English-speaking people dropping by here, a summary of my thoughts on the "Save Dollhouse"-campaign.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I really don't like the idea, that people are already trying to "save" dollhouse from cancellation.

1) none of us have seen it. we don't know, if it's any good. i like to judge a show (and start action) after i've actually seen it.

2) this is a new management at Fox. headed by Kevin Reilly who came over from NBC, where he renewed The Office after incredibly low ratings in the first season. He is known to give shows a chance to grow. So far, Fox' support for Dollhouse has been incredible. Joss trusts in his support, altough he said, he didn't want to work with them anymore after Firefly. That's good enough for me.

3) What image does such a campaign deliver? basically such a campaign is saying "this show is ALREADY in trouble", which looking from the two points mentioned above, simply isn't true. the problem is: people are talking about this (wired.com, boingboing.com, popwatch.ew.com filmjunk.com, fanlib.com, etc.), they are talking about a failing show 8 months before it premiered, and what they are not talking about, is the show. the trailer. the interviews. this is the definition of bad marketing: highlighting not even real, but potential problems, and shifting the focus away from the positive things that are worth anticipating. the trailer, for instance. nobody out there will get interested in a show, just because they heard, that the guy who's doing it has fans that are already trying to "save" it, because they've been burned by the network. somebody out here might get interested in a show, where a group of people have their personalities replaced and memories erased to commit thrilling acts of what-ever-you-want.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

My final note goes out to the start of the campaign at dollhouseforums.com. Even they don't consider the campaign a "save the show"-thing (anymore). They explicitly distance themselves from any panicking, and just want to hype Dollhouse. They love Fox' support for the show. So, when the consensus is reached, to not talk about this as a "Save Dollhouse"-thing, I guess we best start hyping the show. I hope this will be my final post on this topic. :)

Trailer Wars (III)

Dollhouse: 35,717
Fringe: 33,513

"It took all of about 20 minutes."

Let me get this disclaimer out of the way right from the start. It’s safe to say that many of the regular Pajiba crowd are Browncoats who already love themselves some “Firefly.” This column isn’t for you. There are already plenty of smart, well written, in-depth articles about the wonderfulness of “Firefly,” pieces written by folks who are much more smart-like and gooder with the words than I. Instead, I’m writing this for folks who haven’t seen “Firefly” before. People who, much like myself until about a year ago, thought this was just another stupid sci-fi show.

As with many “Firefly” episodes, the primary plot, while strong enough on its own, is really about servicing the characters, rather than the other way around.

Ironisch wird's dann bei:

Unlike many sci fi shows, there’s very little techno-babble or stilted exposition, and the dialogue itself is well paced, with a ton of comedic beats interspersed in even the most serious moments, keeping the whole thing from getting as dark as something like “Battlestar Galactica.” In fact, as much as I love “Battlestar,” “Firefly” is probably a far more accessible show for the masses, as it’s much lighter in both tone and visual composition.

Das ganze übrigens im Rahmen ihrer "The Best 15 Seasons of the Past 20 Years"-Reihe.

Hang back a little

By the way, you know how people always spec brand new shows too soon? Before they've had time to secure a second season or even settle into their own patterns. Well, you're going to want to write a Dollhouse spec as soon as this thing hits the air or even before. No, you are. Resist it. Hang back a little. I think this show is going to take us on a journey, and we have to get a feel for its trajectory before we jump on.

Dollverse reviewt "Echo"

So, what doesn't work? I'm not sure I understand how it works on a weekly basis particularly well. Episode two is going to be important here. If people are tuning in to not engage their brains at all, I'm not convinced they will follow what's happening, as the opening 10 minutes are all over the place. The first 10 minutes, in fact, pull you through so much material and situations it's difficult to identify exactly who (or what) we're supposed to be watching for - which, in a way, is probably the point. It is well written, though. And that is, ultimately, about as flawed as it gets, I think. It's clear right from the beginning you're not going to be watching Every Other Show on your telebox. Goodbye, Gil Grissom - welcome to the Dollverse.

So, spoilers! What are the reveals we hadn't known about, who are the characters we hadn't heard about who inhabit the world, and what are the core locations? What clear mythology elements are set up? I'm not saying. That's the show's job. What I will say is there's more going on that we all knew, and there's other people in this show we're all gonna be meeting.

A fandom aside: I predict Dollhouse will be fanfic central. The premise is so wide yet there's clearly defined parameters going on at the same time (read: it's a rich world to draw from), this is going to generate a huge amount of fic. And probably specs. Seriously. If you want a show where your characters can do anything, this is it.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how excited am I? 8. It's a solid opener. There's an awful lot of set up to get through in the episode, so I'm keen to see how it works week to week. I get the feeling there's huge potential for fun in this series which people aren't yet aware of -- and heartbreak people aren't expecting. "Echo" really sets up a slow brewing storm, and how these characters react is the thing which interests me. They can be brilliant, or they may be terrible. Or both. When the shit starts to hit the fan in Dollhouse, the situation will be... Fluid.

Is it January yet?

The continuity and prolongation of time

„We immediately know only the present moment, which alone immediately exists. The future we only conjecture; the past we remember, or think we remember. What do we remember? Our own experienced thoughts and feelings. But a thought or feeling cannot be resuscitated; for when it is past that very thought ceased to exist. Neither can anything similar exist; for similarity consists in the likeness of two feelings for a mind which feels them both and compares them. But two feelings at different times cannot be compared, because they do not exist together.
Thus, all we know is memory. We cannot go behind it.”
